Boxwood - completed
It’s been three days, and I’ve finally finished the boxwood. Boxwood are wonderful in the studio. Even after sitting under a hot spotlight, my little sprigs look just like they did the day I cut them.
As much as I liked that soft yellow in the background, it was a bit boring. I added a warmer yellow which helped, but it was still an empty space. Then I picked up one of my blues, held my breath and hoped I liked it-

I removed the very back leaf from the bottom cluster of sprigs, and I think it helped the composition. The darkest lines of the bottle were toned down using Rembrandt warm grays, and the foreground shadows lightened.
I’m not thrilled with my foliage, but I’m a lot happier with the background and had fun doing the little glass jar.
The Boxwood Sprigs are 12″x 9″ on Wallis sanded paper.

that’s a nice study. I like the colours and the composition.
Thanks, I don’t find still life composition an easy task. I usually work from photos, so the studio set-up was a new challenge for me. I’m currently playing with something from the holley tree…
