Yesterday, I stopped working on the church candles after the two hour time limit expired, and posted the seagull sketch and this image:
The upper left candle was too big, but now looks like it belongs to the rest of the group:
I’ll use a color shaper to refine some of the edges before I finish this, […]

It was nice to be able to start this in a clean studio. The layout was done with soft vine charcoal in about 20 minutes, and the colors blocked-in and fixed after another hour.
It’s always amazing to see what happens to a perfectly good sketch after the initial block-in is complete. It’s an ugly phase […]

Nothing fancy today- just a sketch from the sketchbook. I’d planned on starting another pastel from this week’s WDE today, but decided to clean up the studio instead. I cleaned off all the pastels I used for the market scene and got them put away, and the dirty towels and chamois went into their own […]

Whew! It’s finally done, and I’m pooped. I remembered a signature, and it’s incorporated it into the picture on the bag in the lower right.
Market Day
Soft Pastel, 12×18
Now that it’s finished, I’m really glad I reworked the green umbrella and the monkey-faced zombie-man. It was hard to brush off all that pastel and start over, […]

I began today by wiping out Mr. Zombie-man and the green umbrella. This composition is too busy for patterns, and the warm green just wasn’t working with the rest of the picture. Mr. Seedseller looks a lot more human today than he did yesterday, but I think he snuck out to the tanning salon while […]

I’m still working on the market scene today. I brushed out some places I didn’t like, and I still don’t like what I’ve done to the man’s face. I added the woman’s other arm, too! It was missing in that first picture- oops.
This is the most complicated piece I’ve ever done, but I’m pretty […]

Today’s pastel comes from the Weekend Drawing Event at WetCanvas! The image I’m working from is a market scene in China. This is my first attempt at people.
When the WDE begins, you’re allowed 1/2 hour to set up, and two hours to work. The image is posted to the forum after two hours, and is […]

Great photographs seldom happen by themselves, and artists often use reference photos to compose a painting. Starting with a photo that has crisp colors and a pleasing composition make creating the artwork that much easier.
On occasion, the artist may have need for slides or printed images. Juried shows, galleries, and artist associations often ask for […]

It’s so dreary today, I decided to spend the day at the beach. First, I did a rough block-in from a photo I took in Ocean City, NJ:
Then I added some softer blues to the sky and the sand, and located some tufts of beach grass:
Cool blues were used for the clouds. Soft golds, creams […]

There’s a lot to look at in this little pastel. Areas of color give form to the flowers, while broken strokes keep the eye moving around the composition. The visual stimulation is further excited by the placement of warm colors next to cool.
Garden Chaos
Soft Pastel, 9X12
Nasturtiums are such colorful flowers, and their rounded leaves […]
