February Pastel Strokes

Each month, the pastel forum at WetCanvas! hosts a challenge where participants draw from the same reference photo. Last month our host was from Trinidad, and I got to draw a lovely bunch of coconuts. This month’s thread is an awesome still life posted by a member who does the most amazing pieces that use light as subject matter.

What’s interesting about the image is it’s simplicity, yet often it’s the simplest forms that are the most difficult to draw, like ellipses.

Pastels are always so ugly at the beginning. Can you tell what it is yet?

I’ve been to the Van Gogh Museum touring the online gallery, and I have an idea for the February Fine Line Artists project. Much of Van Gogh’s later work exhibits drawing-like qualities, with individual strokes easily discernable to the naked eye. What a perfect method to try with a drawing medium like soft pastel.
