More Pastel Strokes

I’m continuing to layer the pastel. The background values are established, the bubbles are starting to appear, and I’m happy with it’s progress today considering how much time I spent looking at Van Gogh’s paintings.

February Pastel Strokes, step 3

Studying Van Gogh’s paintings is time consuming, as he was a prolific painter. Like many people, I am familiar with his more famous paintings, but I’m finding there are many more that I’ve never seen. I’ve also been reminded that Van Gogh’s work was not always colorful.

Much of Van Gogh’s life and personality can be discovered through the letters he wrote to his brother Theo. Discovering that Van Gogh expected only one in twenty drawings to be successful was a bit of a surprise, but after visiting the Van Gogh Museum today I think it held true for his paintings as well.
