Sketchbook: The Hat Lady

This week’s comments on my WDE drawings have really surprised me. Although I worked much harder on the popcorn cart, the hat lady seems to be the favored drawing. So now I’m thinking about doing something with her in pastel.

I’ve always been fond of Monet’s La Promenade, and I was thinking something similar might work for this. Here’s the sketch from the WDE:

WDE Mar 9, The Hat Lady

In the original photo, she’s holding a very large white bag, and appears to be looking for her keys. I didn’t like the bag, and gave her a flower basket instead. Unfortunately, I paid absolutely no attention to her hands, and now she looks like she’s playing an air saxophone. Not Good. Funny, but not good.

She also seems a little stiff, and there’s really no continuity in the scene. Garden shears would more likely be in her hand than an umbrella. I suppose I could put a bird’s nest in her hands, or maybe a small book. A birdbath behind her, perhaps? A little movement in her skirt wouldn’t hurt, either. At any rate, she’s not ready for pastel.

I must admit, I like Dianna’s method of getting the drawing correct and then transferring it onto the support. Transferring the hat lady onto Wallis paper will be much easier than trying to draw her freehand.

Now the only thing remaining is what to put in her hands. Garden shears, or a saxophone?
