Sketchbook: Garden Girl
Remember the hat lady? I’ve been tinkering around with an updated version of her today. The new drawing is on 11×14 inch paper, and she’ll eventually be transferred onto a 12×16 inch pastel support.

As you can see, she’s no longer playing an invisible saxophone. She still needs a flower basket, but I’m undecided about putting garden shears in her other hand. Both have been in and out of the sketch a couple of times, but that’s the point of transferring a final image- the bugs are all worked out, and it’s ready for color.
Using 11×14 drawing paper assures my final image will fit onto the 12×16 pastel paper. It also gives me a couple extra inches to work with, so there will be lots of room for flowers.
When I’m satisfied with the sketch, I’ll use tracing paper to transfer the image and my original will remain intact on the sketchpad. And the hat lady? She’s forever playing the air sax between the pages of my sketchbook.
