Daisy Speaks

Hi everybody! It’s me, Daisy Dog logging in from Mom’s computer. I got a bath today, and she’s cleaning up the bathroom. Oh, I smell soooo good!
After my bath, we went outside. It was such a nice day Mom brought her camera outside too. She let me watch while she took some pictures.
These grow in the back garden. I think they’re called shortcake plants. That’s what they’re always talking about anyway, strawberry shortcake…

They have azaleas all over the yard, but they don’t all bloom at the same time. They have lots of different varieties, but Mom is rather fond of the white ones because they’re so pretty against the red brick house.

She got lots of pictures of this little guy sipping nectar from the lilacs. She says she wants to color him in pastel. I think his colors are pretty just like they are. Mom is kind of weird.

I saw her working on a book review today, but I’m not sure when she’ll be done with it. Oops, I think I hear her coming… I better get off the computer before I get caught. Bye for now- Woof!

Daisy,
Please ask your mom how she keeps the slugs away from her shortcake plants! They eat all my strawberries before they’re ripe.
Thanks,
Meg
Mom says the best remedy for slugs is beer.
Use a shallow pan (Pyrex pie pans work well) and pour some beer into it so it’s about 3/4 full. Place the pan so the rim is just above the ground level. The slugs go in, but they can’t get back out. It’s not known whether they drown, or die from alcohol poisoning.
Remove any dead slugs on a daily basis, and give ‘em fresh beer every 3-4 days. This can also be done with the canned varieties by burying the can almost to the rim, and filling half full of beer.
Note: A true brew connoisseur would never, ever drink canned beer.
Thanks for the tips! I’m going to go try that.
And ironically enough, we had a party last night and someone brought a case of Budweiser cans. “What the @$#%()& am I going to do with these??” sez I. I was going to throw them out. Now I know exactly what to do with them!
I’ll look forward to their review.
I planted my slug trap on Saturday. It’s the bottom two-thirds of a beer can, with earth heaped up around the edges. Half full of bad beer.
I checked it this afternoon, and I had caught 9 slugs and 2 snails. Thanks, Lisa!
No problem, Meg. Don’t you just love all those traditional springtime activities? Picnics in the park, opening the windows, and having a slugfest in the beer garden!
