Playing with Poppies

poppy field update

Here’s the latest on the poppies. I started by taking a little off both the top and bottom of the buildings. Nothing in this picture was going to work while those buildings were as tall as the trees. At this distance, they need to almost disappear to appear real.

I’ve added more soft grayed-greens to the far fields. I used some medium grays and warm gray-blues on the buildings, and some grayed medium blues and purples in the middle ground shrbbery.

The village rooftops are red in the original photo, which came from the reference image library at WetCanvas. When I used the reds of the poppies to locate the village (remember the block-in?) it was to unify the background with the strong reds in the foreground.

I added some light pink to the clouds which I then repeated in building rooftops. This toned down the deep reds, and provided a visual path of reds leading the eye from the foreground to the background. A few dots of pink appear again in the wildflowers that have magically appeared next to the bushes.

Oh! I also added some new reds into the poppies, just to vary the color. I don’t like middle ground trees yet, and the foreground still needs work, but I think I need to leave the sky, buildings, and middle ground shubbery alone.

Opinions? I’d really like to hit my hubby up for another frame. ;)
