Pangs of Guilt

Field of Red Poppies, 12x16
Field of Red Poppies
Soft Pastel, 12×16

Okay, I’m feeling terribly guilty for not finishing the poppies. So here it is. Done. I will not do anything more to it, I promise. I’ve heard Wallis paper will take up to 25 layers of pastel, but why push it?

What did I finally end up doing to “fix” this? I started by adding random lumpy shapes into the middle ground flowers. Hopefully this eases the transitional view from foreground to background. Then I used some short vertical strokes of muted reds over the far flowers so they wouldn’t look so flat. Then I did the same thing with some muted greens.

I think there’s now a better transition from front to back, and I have loaded it into the Gallery on the website.

So what’s next on the art adventure agenda? I don’t know, but I’ll bet it’s not a landscape.

This is super Lisa! It came out really nicely and I think you made a good decision by adding the “random lumpy shapes” to the mid-ground.

You sound like me when it comes to landscapes: reluctantly excited to start, wondering what to do in the middle and glad it’s over by the end. ;)

A stellar job for your efforts though!

This is gorgeous!!! Your pastel work is just beautiful, and if this is what you get when you struggle with a landscape, please keep struggling. I’m not sure how I found your blog (maybe Robyn Sinclair) but I’m glad I did. Very nice work!

Thank you Rita! I’m so glad you think it turned out okay. Adding the lumpies was definately an improvement to the middle ground. I’m VERY glad to have this off the easel, but much happier with the results than I thought I would be.

Hi Joan. Thank you for the kind remarks. I’m delighted you like it. I’ll keep working with the pastels. I have too much time (and money) invested in them to toss them out just yet.

Wow, great finish! I absolutely love the shapes and colors in the poppies in the foreground.

So, do they sell frames in 12×16?

It’s not a popular size, but I’ve seen them. Both PictureFrames.com and AmericanFrame.com will let you upload an image & create a custom size frame. There’s no charge for assembley, but the mat is extra at PictureFrames.
