Teacher of the Year
I haven’t done many animal drawings, but I’ve wanted to try a “big cat” for some time now. Being a dog owner, I’m also not terribly familiar with cats. This one was my first, and it took me two days of erasing before it was ink-able. The sunglasses disguise the perspective boo-boos, but sunglasses on a big cat? Well, that would just be silly.
So how do you draw a big cat? Without the tinted shades? You hop over to Wendy Prior’s blog and see how she does it. Wendy recently posted the coolest cat tutorial ever, so I’ve decided to give it a go.
Here it is in progress, starting with the initial sketch on Wallis paper using vine charcoal. Following Wendy’s method, I was able to get this on paper in about 20 minutes.

Sure beats the heck out of two days with an eraser, doesn’t it? Next, I wanted to locate some stripes so he started looking like a tiger, but he didn’t look very happy.

In fact, he looks like he didn’t get his Frosted Flakes this morning.
Diddling with vine charcoal on sanded paper will tone it with an interesting pattern.

I think we’re ready for some color.

So here he is, all blocked in. He looks a little like Garfield, doesn’t he?
So far, so good. He does not resemble a dog, a cow, or a horse. He looks like a cat. Who cares if it’s Garfield?
You know what that calls for, don’t you? Cookies! Elves don’t really bake cookies, so I’m off to the kitchen to make some dough. I’ll get back to the tiger after a proper snack.
Wendy’s method works like a charm. I you haven’t tried it yet, well, why haven’t you tried it?

Hi Lisa!
Thankyou for mentioning me! And your tiger is looking grrrrrrreat
Definitely looks like a tiger to me and not at all like Garfield
It definitely helps to have a nice easy method of doing things and the good ol’ triangle method makes it much easier
Wendy, you swept the fear of big cats right out of the studio. Watching the triangles fall together merited a cookie celebration!
You are an AWESOME instructor! Thank you!
