Update and a Short Critique
I’ve made some revisions to the Vetheuil pastel. I was fascinated by the pink roof found in another version, and by the cover of one of my books which has a much darker picture on the cover. They were very influential in the creation of this piece. You can click on the thumbnails for larger images.
I adjusted the picture by adding some purple to the roof behind the sunflowers. The colors were so close in value that the flowers literally disappeared into the roof, and the intensity of all those pinks, oranges and yellows was enormously hard on my eyes.
I added some light pink to the house on the right to make the flower heads easier to see, and a spot of sunlight to the right behind the small child standing in the walkway. A tiny bit of bright green was added to the grass behind the far left pot, and I tried to size down some of those over sized flower heads.
I omitted the puffy white clouds that can be seen in the original, and added a tad more sky at the top. I think the revisions are an improvement, as I was finding the whole thing rather difficult to look at.
Cotton ball clouds and lollipop trees are two things I was told to avoid drawing if I wanted my pictures to look realistic. Fortunately, Monet was not in my second grade art class.
