Monet at Argenteuil

After Monet: The Artist’s Garden at Argenteuil
Soft Pastel, 8 x 11
When Monet settled in Argenteuil, he painted many tranquil domestic scenes reflecting his contented life there. Visitors included Edouard Manet and Auguste Renoir, both of whom painted Monet’s family in the garden.
Renoir: Madame Monet with Her Son
Manet: The Monet Family in the Garden
Although I find them quite similar, Manet is rumored to have advised Monet to tell his friend Renoir, that he ought to quit painting because he really hadn’t any talent. Friendly rivalry I suppose, as they socialized and supported each other quite often.
On another occasion, Renoir painted his friend Monet Painting in His Garden at Argenteuil. Today’s pastel is a copy of what (I believe) Monet was painting while Renoir painted the picture. Both were painted in 1873. The yellow house is there behind the dahlias, and if you look closely, you can just see the couple that’s also in Monet’s painting. Kinda neat, huh?
I’ve seen several images of The Artist’s Garden at Argenteuil, but never the original. I don’t know if it’s a brightly colored piece, or a subdued one. Anyway, the copy I worked from has the softer colors.
