Revisions at Argenteuil

Today, I spent some time cleaning up the studio. The biggest task was cleaning off all the pastels I’ve been using. The next task was getting my last three pastels put away so they don’t get damaged. But before I could do that, I was going to have to fix one of them first.

I wasn’t real happy with The Garden at Argenteuil, and it was going to require some changes before it could be put away. It wasn’t reading very well because the house was to bright, and the dahlia foliage was too blue.

I started by using a light taupe over the yellow to tone it down. Then I got rid of some white flowers, added a few more red dahlias, and a warmer yellow to some of the others.

It still didn’t look right, so I added some warm greens to the dahlia foliage. Better. Then I incorporated those same greens into the foreground lawn. Much better. Then, I added some orange from the trees to a few places in the grass, and on a couple of red dahlias to help pull this disjointed view together.

Garden at Argenteuil, revised

Adding the warm greens, yellows and oranges to the foreground has successfully tied the foreground to the background. I’m pleased with the results, and have retired this one to the portfolio.
