Soft Pastel Sketch

soft pastel sketch, market scene
Market Scene Sketch
Soft Pastel, 9×12

I did this little sketch today, and I’m pleased with the yellow umbrella. My brain was telling me it should be lighter on top, but I wanted to get the sun coming through the fabric, which meant it needed to be lighter underneath.

I also like the pink structures, but more atmospheric distance and proper drawing perspective is needed. In the reference photo, there’s quite a bit of tree on the right side of the picture, and a big ugly truck behind the front table. I completely forgot to put in the other tree branches which is too bad, because they would have done a great job covering those wonky windows. I left the big ugly truck out on purpose.

This was good practice for eliminating needless information contained in crowded market scenes, but I can see that I’m going to need lots of practice doing that… for now, let’s just pretend it’s really really early, and nobody’s there yet.

The basement has finally started looking like an art studio again. I have two presents that still need to be wrapped, but they’re local, and don’t need to be shipped anywhere. Our local news reported that the Monday before Christmas is usually the busiest day of the year for the Post Office, but we were sneaky, and shipped ours last week from the UPS Store! Two boxes have already arrived at their destination, and according to their tracking system, the other should reach it’s destination tomorrow.

I always forget how busy I get this time of year. Baking, and wrapping, and shipping, oh my! I’ll be back to posting more regularly after the holidays, and planning more in depth study of Impressionism and the artists involved, more reviews, and maybe even a couple of originals!

Ooo, great job with the umbrella color! It’s tough making up things that aren’t in the picture or hidden behind stuff you don’t want. It sooo much easier to just reproduce the photo.

I can think up creatures and stupid random stuff, but you want me to draw that brick wall behind the truck without acutally seeing it? My imagination just doesn’t work that way. ;) You did an excellent job.

    Happy Holidays!

Thanks, Meg! I think this scruffy sketch has possibilities for a larger version. I can play around with adding a few more figures, and altering colors on this little one, and not worry that I’m messing up something larger.

Have a safe and happy holiday!
