So Far So Good

Phew! I think I’m slowly but surely finding the best colors in the pastel box that work well for landscapes. I think my atmospheric perspective shows some improvement even though I let those distant buildings get too big. I’ll have to take a little off the top (or bottom), but I’m a whole lot happier […]

Oh No! Not Another Landscape!

Yessiree, it’s time for another landscape. Just because they’re my weakest subject (right after algebra) is no reason not to do them. Practice makes perfect, right?
I still need a rough idea of where things are going to go, so I start with a sketch using soft vine charcoal. It’s easy to brush it out of […]

Critiquing Your Artwork, Part 2

Previously, I was discussing the waterfall composition by values, which are easier to distinguish in gray scale than in color. The first time I tried doing this, I was pleased with the gray scale, but didn’t like the color version. And now that I’m experiencing deja vu all over again with the waterfall, I think […]

The Seven Minute Landscape

You’ve heard of the Minute Waltz? Well, how about the seven minute landscape? Since it’s been a while between new images, I thought you might get a kick out of seeing someone create, and frame a pastel landscape in just under 7 minutes.
Part 2 of my waterfall critique regarding color and intensity is still under […]

Critiquing Your Artwork, Part 1

Determining what’s gone wrong in a painting can often be a problem. Learning how to critique your own work can save you hours of agony in the studio, and major bucks at the art store.
Although the following critique is based on an article found in The Pastel Journal, it’s just as applicable to other mediums. […]

Shades of Gray

No new update today. I’ve gotten some very good advice from an accomplished landscape artist, and I’m taking a step back to evaluate what I’ve done, and how to make it better. In the meantime, take a look at the landscapes of Susan Borgas to see what a pastel landscape should look like.
So today I […]

The Waterfall

Okay, I didn’t give up on the waterfall. Today I started by toning down the orange trees with Art Spectrum’s Flinders Red Violet #D517. Then I added some neutral browns to the rocks, and some earthy blue-greens to the pine trees. Here’s today’s revision:

It’s looking better, but I think the rocks on the far side […]

I Hate Landscapes

I hate landscapes. I don’t know if I hate them because they always turn out awful, or if they always turn out awful because I hate doing them. It’s got to be one or the other, because I certainly enjoy looking at them. However, the next image is an exception to that statement.

Gosh, and I’d […]

It’s Earth Day!

Today is Earth Day, which also happens to be our anniversary. Hallehujah, a date we can both remember! Hopefully we’ll remember our wedding anniversary from now on.
Here’s an update of the outdoor scene I’m doing to celebrate Earth Day.

I have no idea how this will finish. It should be interesting for all of us!
There are […]

Tomorrow is…

In honor of Earth Day tomorrow, I’ve decided to try an outdoor scene. Most people call them landscapes, but since I do lousy landscapes I’m going to try doing an outdoor scene instead.
I use soft vine charcoal for sketching because graphite can shine through several layers of pastel.

Next? More shadows, some sunlight, and some pretty […]
